{simply sweet | a friday in sedona}

We've made it through another week!
Want to know what go me through this one? Memories of my Sedona trip from earlier this month. It was truly glorious and refreshing and perfect! Every day I was able to be outside in nature and take in all the beauty that Sedona has to offer. Here is just one tiny collection of the architecture found in nature. Happy Friday!

{thursdays take two | DIY wooden animal magnets}

Hello Lovelies! Happy Thursday!
Today's take two comes from the very sweet blog of Petit Pippin. We read their DIY post and thought it was the sweetest thing! Had to share. Take a look.

Today we thought it would be fun to share a quick tutorial for these simple DIY wooden animal magnets that we recently created. They come together lickety-split and look so charming up on a fridge or any other magnetic surface (they'd also make great gifts). Get the kids involved and make it a fun family crafternoon!

  • Flat 1" wooden discs (craft store)
  • Wooden iron-on veneer edging (hardware store) | in place of the wooden veneer, thin balsa wood sheets (craft store) or free printable woodgrain paper can be used (find a resource link over on our old blog).
  • Plain magnets (craft store)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks (the low heat variety works well with this project - for use with adult supervision)
  • Scissors
  • Fine tipped permanent pens (we love these Micron ones from Sakura)
  • Optional - colored markers, felt pens, glitter, sequins, or anything else your kids want to use to dress up their magnets
Draw animal faces onto your wooden disks. Your kiddos can get crafty with whatever supplies you have on hand. The more whimsical their creations the better! Cut ear shapes out of the wooden veneer edging (that's what we used for this project), thin balsa wood, or printed woodgrain paper (cardstock is recommended).
Adhere ears to the back of your magnets (woodgrain facing to the front side of your magnets) with a small spot of hot glue. Apply a magnet to the back of each disk with a dab of glue. Press firmly together for a moment until glue has set. Adult supervision is suggested for this step.
Once your glue is fully set, you're done! Use your magnets on the fridge or on any metal surface around the house. If you have extras, be sure to pack up a set for gift giving! Valentine's Day anyone?!

{to sigh for | amara resort and spa}

I recently had the privilege of spending the entire day at the Amara Resort and Spa in Sedona.

I must tell you it was one of the most pleasant experiences in recent memory. I left with glowing skin and a feeling of relaxation that I cannot put in words. The spa itself is small and in a separate building from the rest of the hotel but where it lacked in spaciousness it made up in quality of services. I enjoyed a facial, a soleful traveler signature pedicure and a lovely classic manicure.

Between my services I enjoyed a mouth watering lunch at the Saltrock Southwest Kitchen which looks out onto the pool. As I waited for my food I sipped on a Guava Cooler (guava, organic ginger agave nectar, and club soda). Can you just feel the relaxation oozing out of that zero proof cocktail? It was so yummy that I asked for one to go so that I could lay out by the pool and sip away.

There are many spas to choose from in Sedona and many of those are on the main strip. In my research I found that only three really had the "resort" feel that I was looking for. I was very close to attending the spa at L'Auberge because I had heard great things. Unfortunately at L'Auberge they do not offer manicures and pedicures (that is according to their website) and the would not allow my 14 year old niece to be a guest even though her mother was going to be present. That was unfortunate.

We almost went to the Hilton but I was truly hoping for a more "Sedona" experience and unfortunately the Hilton, although beautiful, just wasn't going to cut it. The spa that had caught my eye instantly was Mii Amo which would have been around 20-30 minutes out of our way but gorgeous! Unfortunately they do not allow you to use the spa unless you are a guest of the hotel. Bummer. In the end we were thrilled with our spot at the Amara Resort and Spa. A spectacular experience that I hope to recreate sometime soon!

{to sigh for | 10 healthy cocktails}

Happy Tuesday!
Just in time for summer that is headed our way, how about some healthy inspiration? We are all trying to get into our bathing suits but we don't want to give up our hand crafted cocktails. So what is a girl to do?

Luckily for us there is a new trend for Healthy Cocktails. Believe it or not, bartenders are now creating yummy drinks that have added health benefits. Talk about retro...this is taking us back to the 16th and 17th centuries when people drank spirits to treat ailments.

So what can we expect from these so called "healthy" cocktails? You're going to find greek yogurt, root vegetables, spring greens, and the ever popular coconut water. Even the liquor brands are developing natural and sustainable alternatives.

One of my favorite additions is Kale. Since I became a vegetarian 3 years ago I have been eating tons of kale and now I can have it in a cocktail! yes please!
Other greens being included are wheatgrass, celery juice and good ol' cucumber.

Another fun addition that I haven't seen yet but have been hearing about is the appearance of peas, shoots, and sprigs. How fun and refreshing! There is a daiquiri from Saxon + Parole's that combines rum sugar snap peas, house-made lemon-thyme cordial and tarragon salt.

In addition to all of these we have savoury options that will include lots of veggie juices and then the florals and infusions that give us an elegant and artisanal feel. Finally you're going to see lots of gingers and spices as well as yummy creamy nut milks. My mouth is watering!

So now that you're thirsty, let me share some recipes with you:

  1. Kale Margarita from Running with Tweezers
  2. Pomegranate Ginger Fizz from Will Cook for Friends
  3. Blueberry Mojito from The Novice Chef
  4. Pea cocktail from Fennel & Fern
  5. Coconut Gin and Tonics from Minimalis Baker
  6. Grapefruit Rosemary Kombucha from Oh My Veggies
  7. Charred JalapeƱo and Carrot Margaritas from Aida Mollenkamp
  8. Beet and Carrot Cocktail from Cooking Stoned
  9. Cucumber Cape Codder from Martha Stewart
  10. Carrot Mimosas from Kitchen Treaty
Have a yummy rest of your week!

{within-spiration | retro vintage trend}

This spring/summer is going to bring forth a new or should I say Old trend. A fresh new look at vintage and retro styles is headed our way. Be prepared to see new rustic designs which will include bird cages, owls and stags. Rose prints are getting updated with a modern touch and even ombre looks are making a comeback. Take a look at our inspiration pieces here.

There is a big influence towards a retro kitchen which includes lots of vintage imagery and typography. (black and chunky fonts). Lots of little owls are peeking through which I'm actually quite excited about. What's cuter than an owl? I also like the dusty and greyed aqua tones that will be coming out.

I'm personally not convinced about the entire trend. I don't think that everyone will jump on this train. The stags for instance are nice but I mostly see them come out during the holidays and not typically on someone's sofa unless they are big hunters.

What do you think of this trend?

{simply sweet | birthday wishes}

Happy Friday! The weekend is just a few hours away.
I'm looking forward to my Birthday Weekend. I've got tons of things on my to do list for tomorrow (when I will turn 36). For today's simply sweet post I gathered some images that capture what I really want to do this weekend.

1. Go to a remote island and breathe in the fresh water air (I'm a wishful thinker)
2. Walk to the local farmers market and pick up some yummy fresh flowers for my kitchen.
3. Have a little picnic that includes cheese + bread + fruit + chocolate
4. Find a free moment to enjoy some delicious ice cream
5. End the day with one of my favorite books

{thursdays take two | beer exhibition}

We're big fans of WGSN Homebuildlife and their February post on this Beer Exhibition was spot on! Great read and had to share.

“Beer” Exhibition by Form Us With Love

Swedish design studio Form Us With Love was commissioned by Stockholm’s Spritmuseum to curate an exhibition dedicated to “Beer” and the art of brewing. Beer-brewing enthusiasts are growing in number all around the world, while in Sweden alone the amount of new independent breweries doubles every year.
“We encourage people to be curious – smelling, feeling and distinguishing ingredients,” says the studio. Tastings will also be organised at the exhibition to tickle the public’s taste buds.
Homebuildlife subscribers can access our trend report on glassware for beer here, and read about the growing number of appliances catering to the homebrew market here.

{within works | in the philippines}

We've made it to Wednesday! Just half the week left! You can do it!
In the meantime, we want to share with you some quick pics that we took before we shipped our latest design boards to the Philippines. Our second international project! You cannot begin to imagine the hours that went into making each and every single board. The photos just don't do them justice. We were happy to say that they travelled safely and all of the samples stayed put! A lot of love...and sweat and tears went into these boards. Our clients were happy and that's all that matters!

We'll share project photos with you soon. For'll have to settle for these little teasers!

{to sigh for | guava}

Happy Tuesday!
Time to sigh over color! Guava is starting to appear everywhere! IT's a modern take on the traditional pink and definitely a great alternative to summer's fuchsia. We love that it has a bit of punch yet it remains ever so soft. Something definitely worth trying this season!

{within-spiration | metallic inspo}

This inspiration post started to come together when I was looking for a new fresh manicure this past fall. I came across the OPI Nordic Collection for Fall/Winter 2014 and really got inspired by the gold.

My research took me to the runways where I saw lots of metallic nails and accessories everywhere.

This got me thinking...where else are we going to see a metallic trend in fall and in the spring? And so I went digging...

New York Fashion Week had just ended and there were tons of metallic purses and shoes. The more I looked, the more I found colors and textures that all tied back to my first OPI image. Girls at NYFW opted for make-up looks with bold brows, cat eyes, and matte coloured lips. Yet I could not find metallics there.

Researching London Fashion Week I saw tons of statement necklaces and lovely minimalism. I also found my not so favorite pastel metallic...yikes. There was also a metallic accented nautical outfit.

So this got me can I incorporate more metallics in my interiors? A lot has been done already but I think it's definitely time to revisit this trend.

 For now, I'll just stick to my gold phone and desk accessories. Lets see where Spring and Summer 2015 take us!

{thursdays take two | dallas shaw inspires}

Today's Take Two comes from my girl crush Dallas Shaw. She shares her top 3 inspiration images and tells us why. Take a look.

February 5, 2015

  I have been spending more time than usual “looking” these past few weeks. As you know I decided to start my own line of product. I blocked off a few weeks of design time and then I changed my mind and asked for everything to come to a halt while I really thought about what I want this to look like before starting my sketches. Artists are naturally observant people and I think I take it to an entirely new level. I have been wandering around taking photos, booked a few new inspirations trips, purchased a wild amount of magazines and this week got sucked into pinterest. Here are my top three inspiration images from the week, and I’ll tell you why:
I have this new obsession with what some companies are referring to as “baby green”. It’s that unique shade of green you catch in an opal. A deeper shade than mint and w a touch more teal than seafoam. I bought these lionette by sade which started the whole thing. Now I can’t stop.

2nd image I can’t look at enough is this interior shot above. I’m inspired by the mix of color here. The neon pink mixed with the vintage is nice but it’s the addition of the crisp white with the other two is what keeps me looking. Definitely something that could work well in my office.
Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset
And last but not least, this braid. Or this bit of braid. Just need my hair to get a bit longer but when it does it’s next on my to-try  list.
Has anyone seen anything I might go crazy over? Make sure you leave a link below, tweet or tag me so I can check it out!!

{within works | converting a barn}

Good Morning Designistas!
Today we share with you some of our inspiration images that we used to convert a barn into a casita. We have not photographed the final product yet, but as soon as we do we will be sharing that with you.

We begin with the photos of the existing barn. It was a BARN. Horses and one time..a long long time ago.

Step two was to come up with some inspiration images for our new casita...

Step three was to create our final floor plan for construction...
Then the construction began...

And with that we leave you...just a little tease until the construction is complete! Final photos and before and afters will come soon! Promise!

Now back to work!
