{thursday's take two | the bright side project}

It's Thursday and time for us to share with you a favorite post from another fabulous blogger! Today's post comes from The Bright Side Project.
We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Four sisters took a portrait together every year for 36 years.

The year was 1975 when world-renowned Nicolas Nixon, a professor of photography at the MassachusettsCollege of Art originally photographed his wife Bebe and her 3 sisters. They were so impressed with the result, they collectively decided to make it a yearly event, the annual family photo. 36 years later, the sisters and Nicolas had all kept their promise, resulting in these 36 beautiful and candid photographs.
The resulting images are full of life and love and time and tradition and speak volumes about how we age and grow and change. Click through to see more of these gorgeous images.

{within works | contemporary southwest residence}

Happy Wednesday Designistas!
How is your week coming along? And your summer? Ours has been slow, which is great because it has given us time to catch up on much needed Photography!
Today we want to share with you a project that we finished last year. It was a ground up construction, which means that when we met our client all we had was a patch of dirt to work with. We loved it! It's such an amazing experience to be with a project from beginning to end! The home owner was a bachelor who wanted a low maintenance contemporary southwest home.
We present to you: Colonia Del Sol Residence
There were four bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a bike room, 4 car garage, home office, outdoor shower, and gorgeous pool!

The living room, dining room, and kitchen were in an open plan full of amazing views all around. The home has all concrete floors, masonry walls, and wood beam ceilings.

We wanted the residence to really be all about its materials and the views! Which are Gorgeous!

The dining room showcased a gorgeous masonry wall and built in bar. Really, it is all about the views! There is an outdoor patio that wraps around the front of the house and the sunsets here are unbelievable.

The custom kitchen was exquisite. Honed granite counters, slate tile backsplash with metal accents. The island stepped up to a solid butcher block counter.

Everyone that lives in the desert knows that we live to live outside. Summer months are definitely hot, but the evenings cool off, the skies clear, and we get the best sunsets and thunderstorms in the United States. We wanted our clients backyard to be a reflection of that and of him. He is an avid biker and swimmer. We wanted to create not only a space to entertain, but a place to relax and rejuvenate.

Powder baths are some of our favorite rooms. It's a small space yet you get to make a huge impact. We chose a terra cotta wall color and designed a custom cabinet that would create clean lines and a lot of storage at the same time. We chose a colorful slate counter and bronze fixtures.

Our client needed an office away from work that he could really get things done in. This was the only room in the house that we used Mesquite wood in. Everything was custom built to our specifications and design.

The shelving was custom built to house his most beloved treasures and of course a tv!

The master bedroom is elegant and understated. We loved finding the hand carved bed and asked local artisans to make us matching nightstands.

Similar to the master bedroom, the master bath is clean, efficient, and beautiful. Limestone counters have a smooth creamy feel and they are balanced by our custom cabinets.

We hope you enjoyed the tour!
Have a beautiful day!

{to-sigh-for | hydrated hair}

Birchbox has done it again! Today's editor's pick for fabulous product comes from Number 4 Hair Care.
I am definitely a blow dryer - curling iron - flat iron addict so when I tried this product I was blown away! My hair felt smoother and softer with less flyaways!
This is an extra hydrating leave-in conditioning mist. I absolutely adore it!
Bonus is that it is cruelty free and certified organic by QCC. It is doing wonders for my naturally curly, thick, and dry hair =)
Happy Shopping!

{within-spiration | black white yellow}

For those of you that follow us, you know we love our Pinterest page. One onf of those nights that I couldn't sleep, I came across Jessica @ Black. White. Yellow. She truly makes our hearts go pitter patter. She lives in Los Angeles...we live in Tucson (it's kinda close). She's a native Texan..I have family in Texas. AND she's a former New Orleanian...well so am I !!! My page would be @ Black. White. Red. So I think we would make a perfect match. =)
She has some really great boards and it was really difficult to pick just one to blog about. Great inspiration on her Pinterest Page. Do check her out!
Since I couldn't just choose one, I will choose the First: Black, White, Yellow.
Here are our faves from that Board:

{thursday's take two | a-thread of thoughts}

For today's favorite blogger of the week, our hats go off to A-Thread of Thoughts. [they have a fabulous shop, click here]
Their recent post on "Choosing Necklaces for your Necklines" was clean, informational, to the point, and visually fabulous. So we had to share it here with you:

WHICH NECKLACE FLATTERS THESE NECKLINES?

I don’t know about you ladies, but I have always wanted a guide of which necklaces to wear with specific necklines.
We put together a simple guide to assist you when you need a little help.  The guide below explains what types of necklaces to wear with a crew neck, scoop neck, strapless, halter,  one shoulder, collared shirt or boat neck.
Remember, these are not absolutes and you are free to wear whatever makes you feel beautiful and fabulous!
Enjoy!
which necklace should i wear with different necklines

We also loved their previous post from July 13th called "Trend Watch - Native Summer". It caught our eye being that we live in the Southwest. So for a special treat we wanted to share that one with you as well:

TREND WATCH – NATIVE SUMMER

TREND WATCH – TRIBAL/AZTEC/NATIVE – Whatever you want to call it – its HOT and we love it and we are calling it NATIVE SUMMER

 The big question is HOW THE HECK do we wear it without looking like we are wearing a carpet?
Very carefully of course.  Make sure that you aren’t over doing it – just small accents here and there will be best.  Maybe limit it to just a small bag or shoes, or if its clothing tone it down to a limited palette of colors.  If it is simple – then add a punch of colors for an unexpected twists.
We’re so in love with this trend we created its own board on Pinterest with inspiration on how to where and what to wear.

{within works | diary of a baby shower}

Happy Wednesday! I hope you are sitting down with your coffee and a notepad because today is a long one! We've got some fabulous party ideas for you!
Last month we hosted a Baby Shower for a dear friend of ours, Gabriella. Since you know how much we love our office, we decided to have it here at 88 Cushing. Planning for this event was very much like a design project. We started with our inspiration, then moved on to do research, planning, layouts, construction and then construction administration =) It was a blast! The party was such a hit that we had to share it with you. I hope that you find inspiration here!
Our first task, was finding a theme. We searched the internet for all kinds of images, until we found the "theme" that really spoke to us: Sugar and Spice.
We wanted something classy, sweet, with a little vintage feel.

Our next step was to come up with a menu of brunch finger foods and signature cocktails. This was the most fun to search for and probably the most labor intensive to prep for but the outcome was devine!
One the Menu we had:
#1 - Crostini with Brie, Strawberry, Honey & Basil
This was super easy to make and probably the tastiest dish! Instead of crostinis we used Melba Toasts to help cut down on time and on bread.

#2 Swiss Cheese & Prosciutto Skewers (with Roasted Red Bell and Basil on top)
#3 Pear and Gorgonzola bites with Honey
(Here is a recipe for one we almost did)

#4 Dried Apricot with Basil-Goat Cheese and Almonds (and a drizzle of honey)
#5 Croissants Capresse (mini) *these were a hit*

For the signature cocktails, we wanted to do one alcoholic and the rest non, so we could cater to our Mommie Gabriella.
#1 Limoncello and Proseco Cooler with Rasberry ice cubes
*this recipe had quite a bit of prep but the end result was not only delicious, but visually gorgeous*

#2 Lemon Ginger Soda with Basil and Mint (Non-Alcoholic)

#3 We also had yummy flavored water: Lemon Mint Cucumber and Strawberry Lime

For dessert, we opted for simple sweet bites. Trader Joes came to the rescue here! The sweets were a nice compliment to the little takeaway gift that Gaby made. She individually wrapped homemade Uruguayan Alfajores

  • Trader Joe's Go Raw trek mix

The decorations we kept light and sweet. Fresh flowers, baby clothes, and sweet signs that we made in the office.

There were absolutely no games played at this shower. Everyone was thrilled =) This day was about two special people: Gabby and Olivia. We wanted them to feel super special and super loved.
Instead of games, we decided to do something extra special for little baby Olivia. I went to the store and purchased 21 Birthday Cards. One for each year of Olivias first 21st years. My idea was to have everyone pick one card, write her a message of sweetness, love, encouragement, advice, support...and seal it tight. Not even Gabriella would know the contents of each card. This is probably my best idea to date. I'm not sure if this has been done before, but the idea came to me while driving one day. I never looked it up on Pinterest or the internet.

Once all the cards were ready, we placed them along a table and numbered each one with the appropriate year.We then placed lots of colorful pens on a table and filled bowls with all types of stickers. We were thrilled at the great response.
Everyone was super excited to write to little Olivia.

I couldn't take enough photos of these sweet moments. Everyone took their time and wrote and wrote and wrote. I also knew that some people would not be alive when Olivia got their card, and that was the most moving of all. I wish I had received a card from my Grandmother when I turned 21...or my Grandfather when I turned 18. I would do anything to have those beautiful moments. So I tried to create this for Olivia. Any extra cards were given to Gabriella so that she can share them with others and have them write to Baby Olivia.

To end the event, it was time to open gifts. As a designer, I have to share some of these great gifts. We all know that baby items are super cute, but some of these things really were magnificent. I saw a onsie that was "Day of the Dead" inspired (which is HUGE here in the Old Pueblo). Another was the sweetest handmade elephant I had ever seen. [you can find a similar one here]. The one that took the cake was a handmade quilt by our lovely friend Lisa. She even has her own labels that read "Made by Mama Lisa". Love Love Love.

It was a wonderful afternoon, and one of the best Brunches I have ever been to, or thrown. =) Lovely women, Lovely drinks, and a Beautiful time. I would do it all over again a million times over. It felt so good to do something so sweet for such a dear friend.

On July 24th a little after midnight, little Olivia joined us. One of the most beautiful babies that I have ever seen.
I'd like to introduce you to the little Princess Olivia.

Hope you have a beautiful week.

{to sigh for | out of print tees}

On Tuesday's we love to share an Editor's Pick of the Week with you. This week we are crushing on a fabulous selection of Women's tees that we are over the moon for! The inspiration for this line is "out of print" books. The company is called Out of Print.

Here's their Mission:
"Out of Print celebrates the world’s great stories through fashion. Our products feature iconic and often out of print book covers. Some are classics, some are just curious enough to make great t-shirts, but all are striking works of art.
We work closely with artists, authors and publishers to license the content that ends up in our collections. Each product is treated to feel soft and worn like a well-read book.
In addition to spreading the joy of reading through our tees and accessories, we acknowledge that many parts of the world don’t have access to books at all. We are working to change that. For each product sold, one book is donated to a community in need through our partner Books For Africa.
How we read is changing as we move further into the digital age. It’s unclear what the role of the book cover will be in this new era, but we feel it’s more important than ever to reflect on our own individual experiences with great literary art before it’s forever changed.
What’s your story?"
Here are our Favorites!
