Hello Everyone!
Today we want to share with you a great article from the Downtown Tucsonan!
We were interviewed the first week of June and we absolutely had to share this with you!
Hope you enjoy!!

Within Studio: Bye-bye NW Side, hello Barrio Viejo

June 07, 2011 (1:20 pm) | Permanent Link

By Teya Vitu

Move your office from Ina and Oracle to Downtown?

Who does that?

That’s what interior designer Florencia Turco DeRoussel decided in July 2010 when she departed Cottonwood Plaza for a 19th century adobe with viga-braced ceilings in Barrio Viejo.

She brought along her sister, husband and former business partner and now the four of them have their four separate businesses at the dual address of 88 Cushing and 301 Convent.

Florencia is the principal at Within Studio, an interior design firm that brings a comfortable elegance to commercial and residential clients, including Spa One and Arizona National Golf Club and she was interior consultant to select the tile for Frost, A Gelato Shop.

“It’s possible to get a Gucci look at a Target price,” she proclaimed. “All you need is guidance on where to spend your money.”

Her husband James DeRoussel started up the environmental design firmForsite; her sister Carla Turco has her own graphic design firm that she calls *nontextual matters, complete with the asterisk, and Benjamin Cole, who used to work with Florencia, now bumps desks with her at his own architecture firm, Incite Architects.

“We call ourselves 88,” Florencia said quite literally as so far there are no exterior signs announcing any of the businesses, only the 88 pronouncing the Cushing Street address.

Florencia just marvels at the pedestrian nature of Downtown and especially the historic character of Barrio Nuevo, which reminds her of her native Argentina. This contrasts greatly with the Ina/Oracle intersection.

“If a wanted a bagel from across the street, do you think I walked? No! I got in my car. Here, I put on my flats a go buy a bagel or walk to HUB,” she said. “I love Downtown. Parking is fantastic. Parking is not an issue at all.”

Many of Florencia’s clients are spread clear across town, far from Downtown, but she doesn’t see that as an impediment.

“Not at all,” Florencia said. “It’s so easy to hop on the freeway or go down Broadway or Stone or Oracle.”

Just at the start of June, the foursome had their first wine and cheese gathering in their courtyard for an assortment of designers and architects for “open discussion about any topic. We want non-competitive conversation. We want to try to do this once a month. Your only entrance fee is wine.”

They have also hosted a variety of events, including an Arizona Public Media event, a model casting call for a lingerie ad, a Watershed Management Group appreciation dinner, and the casting call and after-shop parties for a Spanish-language version of “The Vagina Monologues” called “Dia V.”

“I would say 80 percent of the people had not set foot down here, especially Barrio Viejo,” Florencia said about the newly energized Downtown. “Everybody loves it. They touch the walls. ‘That’s real adobe’ I think it’s all for the positive. They say ‘I didn’t even know it’s down here.’”

Florencia Turco DeRoussel’s ancestry is as exotic as her name. She describes herself as “quarter Swiss-German, quarter Argentinian, quarter Italian and quarter Spanish” and she married a Cajun.

Florencia was born in Argentina, but the family moved to New Orleans when she was five. The Turco sisters arrived in Tucson in 2002 to join Florencia’s then-boyfriend, James DeRoussel, who had preceded them by a year for an architecture job after graduating from Louisiana State University, where James and Florencia met.

After Hurricane Katrina, Florencia convinced her parents and brother to move to Tucson, too. Her father Carlos Turco started Belle Epoque Upholstery and has done awnings for Zin Burger and cushions for North, and her mother Elena Turco is a neuroscience researcher at the University of Arizona.

“My first year here, I hated Downtown,” Florencia said. “Then I came to love it, absolutely love it. ”The first year here I was deathly afraid of Downtown. I got to see the beauty I didn’t see before.”

It took several years for Florencia to convert her love for Downtown to actually basing her business Downtown. The seed was planted in 2009 when Florencia and DeRoussell had their engagement photos shot in Barrio Viejo.

But they did not automatically settle on Barrio Viejo.

“We were looking at the Toole warehouses,” she said. “We looked at the Firestone Gallery area, the Lost Barrio. We looked at a lot of places on Congress.”

Then they came upon the corner property at Cushing and Convent, owned by he Rollings family. The Turco/DeRoussel design clan found a door linking he Cushing and Convent sides had been plastered shut for 20 years. With the doorway restored, the two properties are now united.

“Now you get to witness it like it was in the 1800s,” Florencia said. “Don Rolllings has been a dream-come-true of a landlord,”

Florencia donated her time to pick a interior color palette for the Sonoran Institutes new Downtown offices, and she picked the interior colors and arranged to have new carpeting donated to The Screening Room, She and Carla also launched Ella Group (Spanish pronunciation), a self-defense and empowerment group for women.

“I strongly believe in giving back to the community,” she said. “If I have one wish, I would want to be an example that it’s possible to be part of the community, to give back, no matter how busy or complicated your life is.”

Like many others Downtown, Florencia has the same primary wish to immediately make Downtown a better place.

“I would love a grocery story with a little courtyard where you can enjoy your sandwich. It would do great down here,” she said.

{brooklyn flea}

One of our FAVORITE parts of our New York Trend-Hunting trip was going to the Brooklyn Flea!

"The Flea features hundreds of top vendors of antique and repurposed furniture, vintage clothing, collectibles and antiques,

as well as a tightly curated selection of jewelry, art, and crafts by local artisans and designers, plus delicious fresh food."

We saw so many things! Ate such delicious foods! It was truly inspiring!

There was so much to see that our heads were spinning!!

We've picked just a few to share with you!

We start with Olde Good Things. They have Architectural Salvaged Treasures & Antique Artifacts!

Then we had to stop at this other stand... it was crazy! All kinds of toys, knick knacks, stampes, dolls,

you name it! But it was Beautiful!!! We rolled up our sleeves and found a few treasures for ourselves.

There was so much to see that we couldn't fit all of the photos in one blog!

We brought home with us one tag with the number 44 for our friend Dominic Bonuccelli..

and we purchased two small stamps..8 and 8 for our office at 88 Cushing.

As we wandered through the Brooklyn flea...our eyes were going everywhere!

So much to see! The textures and colors and arrangements of things!

Take a look and you'll see what we mean.....

Every single thing that we saw had beauty...

We came across a pasta vendor and couldn't take our eyes off of the pasta!

Take a look a this!

You can check out some of their fabulous vendors by clicking HERE.

More about the flea from their website:

"Brooklyn Flea operates New York City's best markets, every weekend of the year, featuring hundreds of top vendors of antique and repurposed furniture, vintage clothing, collectibles and antiques, as well as a tightly curated selection of jewelry, art, and crafts by local artisans and designers, plus delicious fresh food. The New York Times called the Flea "One of the great urban experiences in New York"; Country Living, Budget Travel, and Delta Sky ranked the Flea one of the best markets or antiques shows in the U.S.; and Time Out NY named the Flea one of New York's Essential Pick-Up Spots.

Right now the Flea is open every weekend on Saturdays in Fort Greene and on Sundays in Williamsburg, from 10am to 5pm, rain or shine. Both markets feature a similar mix of 125+ vendors on an acre lot: click here for a map and directions to the locations.

From April through Thanksgiving, the markets take place outdoors: on Saturdays in Fort Greene and on Sundays in Williamsburg. From Thanksgiving through March, the market moves indoors to Skylight One Hanson, an event space in the landmark former Williamsburgh Savings Bank, at the Atlantic and Flatbush Ave. intersection. In December we operate the annual Gifted holiday market. And every summer you can find Flea food vendors at the Central Park SummerStage outdoor concert series, where the Flea operates the food and beverage concession.

If you are interested in becoming a vendor, please register through our website. There is a complete list of regular vendors here. We post the coming weekend's vendor lineup and layout every Friday at noon. Read our blog for updates and to find the weekend's Scavenger Hunt items, which are posted on Friday at noon.

See you at the Flea!"

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

{and now for something completely different}

Craigslist always has some interesting things...We were on the hunt for a kitchen island and came across this little gem...

We HAD to share it with you! We are all for artistic expression... but this one really took the cake!

The owner of this kitchen paid an "Italian artist" $4500 for the custom art work that you see on these cabinets.

The actual cabinets came from a home in La Paloma Country Club...

we're not sure about this...

So from this design firm to you.. please don't ever Ever EVER do this!

It's too much!

How could this have been better?

Our suggestion: Paint the flowers on the inside of the cabinets or on the inside of the doors.

That way, when you open the cabinet to get a plate, you have a pleasant surprise! and whimsy art!

So.... here's to being adventurous in our homes.. but remember don't throw in everything AND the kitchen sink!

Choose your focal points.. be subtle.

{why didn't I think of that}

Today's installment of "Why didn't I think of that?" will speak to many of you....

How many of us have Ikea furniture in our office? in our homes? Probably most of us...

I know we do!

We love the pieces, but don't love the fact that everyone else has the same one!

Well, now there is a solution to this! We introduce you to MyKea !

This company came up with a way to personalize your Ikea furniture!

It will be unique, fabulous, and Personal!!!

Check out some of our favorite Ikea Makeovers!

And here's the best part! If you don't have Ikea furniture, you can place the images on your wall!

We are tipping our hats to MyKea!!

I think we're going to head up to Phoenix and hit up our local Ikea!!!

{within eats}

Today's Within Eats takes you to Brooklyn!

And not just anywhere in Brooklyn...but the best place to be on the weekend...

The Brooklyn Flea!

While at the flea we tried some amazing foods!

What really caught our attention was the detail and thought that was put into each booth.

These weren't your ordinary folding tables and junk... this was First Class Eats and Goodies!

Our first Scratchbread whose motto is "you scratch my bread, I'll scratch yours"

Well we were sold! Breakfast was served!

sticky goodness! right down to the last crumb! If you're in New York, you need to find these guys!

Check out their stand..all the breads carefully wrapped with paper and string.. perfect!

Then, we had to have a little lunch... we walked straight to Asia Dog!

These delicious dogs with Asian Inspired toppings were the best!

If this isn't inspiring I don't know what is! Look at those colors!

And the food continues!

We walk a little bit and find tiny Caneles! Thank you Social Eats for this little nugget of heaven!

And nearby we take a little bite from Fine & Raw Chocolate! The choices are endless and one bite is better than the next!

This chocoloate is amazing! But what called to us was the packeging and labeling. Well done!!

And now for something even sweeter... while looking for a little mothers day gift, our friend Kelly,

set her eyes on Maiden Preserves. The sweetest and well...sweetest preserves in Brooklyn!

So well packaged! Right down to the delicate tag! Well Done!

Now we are hungry!!! Off to grab some breakfast!

Hope you all have a Delicious Day!

{new york revisited}

Ten years ago, we lived in New York City....

this time around we saw New York with a different pair of eyes...

we saw design where we had not seen it before...

we appreciated details that we had not noticed in the past..

colors, lighting, people, movement....

so today, we share a different side of New York...

one we found after ten years...

We saw the lovely roof top gardens... the colorful fruit vendors... we had seen these things before..

but did we ever really stop to look at them? We would walk quickly to the subway, never stopping

to take in the colors and textures around us.

Our pictures could never do New York justice... but at least, for a moment, you can see it,

and experience it through our eyes. Magic all around.

Happy Thursday friends!

See you tomorrow!

{brooklyn inspiration}

Since we're talking about Brooklyn..

why not take a little time to sit back and enjoy a small tiny itsy bit of it's beauty.

Here are just a few shots that we took during our trend-hunting day in Brooklyn.

Sometimes it's not about the latest and greatest or the hot designers...

sometimes it can be about the classic, the history, the originals....

Here's to finding what's beautiful and original in your neighborhood!

{thistle & clover}

Happy Tuesday Designistas!

Today we continue our New York trend hunting trip and take you to a tiny but exquisite shop..named... Thistle & Clover.

The minute we stepped into this little shop, our hearts went pitter patter...

From the softest of blouses to the most delicate of rings! We couldn't stop touching everything!

Want to know more? Here it is straight from their website:

"Co-founders Camilla Gale and Rand Niederhoffer conceived of Thistle & Clover as a home away from home. Stacks of beautifully wrought rings sit amidst vintage books and hand pressed note cards. The clothing is carefully hand picked from an exciting group of young, up-and-coming designers that fit into Thistle & Clover’s unique and accessible aesthetic.

The girls met while at university in Scotland and found in one another a kindred spirit. Years of traveling around Europe’s small outdoor markets, searching for one-of-a kind treasures have honed their knack for finding enchanting and special pieces that are not easily located elsewhere.

Thistle & Clover opened in March 2008, and was designed by Edward I. Mills + Associates, an award-winning architectural firm that has created sleek storefronts for companies including Agnes B. and Kenneth Cole, among others.

The store offers treats to their Sunday visitors, and regularly hosts trunk shows and Tailored Event Nights with free bubbly and sweets for their attendees."

You can contact Thistle & Clover here

221 DeKalb Avenue

Brooklyn, NY. 11205

Happy Shopping!

This shout out goes to Camilla and Rand,

{within eats}

Welcome to the second installment of Within Eats!

Today we are back in New York and eating at Landmarc Restaurant!

We stopped in one Friday night and enjoyed (what we were told) was the Best Bone Marrow in the city.

And yes, it was Good!

Here's a little history on this yummy spot:

"Marc Murphy, who blazed across the New York dining scene with his acclaimed interpretation of haute cuisine that was equal parts reverence and iconoclasm, teamed up with his wife, Pamela Schein Murphy, to open their first restaurant, Landmarc [Tribeca] in March 2004, which has since become a neighborhood favorite, serving contemporary bistro fare that blends French and Italian favorites in a decidedly cool space worthy of its cutting-edge Tribeca setting. In describing Landmarc's wine list, The New York Times' Eric Asimov wrote, "open the hard-bound binder of 22 laminated pages, and you might just slap yourself to see whether you're dreaming." Indeed, the restaurant's 300-bottle wine list features hand-picked, famed and esoteric selections from around the world, with a minimum mark-up per bottle, reflecting Murphy's belief that a great dinner should be accompanied by an equally great bottle of wine. To further that philosophy for small parties and solo diners, Murphy offers a selection of over 50 half bottles. Classic dishes and amazing wine served in a cutting-edge space: Landmarc [Tribeca] is the bistro for destination diners and neighborhood regulars alike."

You can find Landmarc in tribeca at:

179 West Broadway

New York, NY. 10013

Happy Fooding!

As promised, we have been blogging about our recent New York City trend hunting trip.

Something that is very important to us, as you all know, is INspiration.

This comes in so many forms, shapes, sizes, colors, and mediums...

While walking down the street we came across a vendor with many used books...

one caught our eye...Shel Silverstein "Falling Up".  We stopped... we took out $4... and we purchased our book.

Next we stopped into Absolute Bagels for our breakfast.  The best bagels in town!

As we sat in the middle of Central Park, with our new book and delicious bagel, we opened to the first page.

There it was. The first poem. Our inspiration was right there.

It had been 10 years since we had visited New York, and this was before Within Studio was even created....

after so many times of falling down, after so many trials, after so many downs, we finally fell UP!

Here we were, 10 years later, with a company that we LOVE, doing what we love to Do!

We Fell UP! We fell up over the town of Bahia Blanca, up over the tree tops of New Orleans, Louisiana,

up over the mountains of Tucson, Arizona... Up into New York City where it all began.

A beautiful moment for us, for me.

This summer Within Studio will turn 6 years old.

We're going to throw down!

Cheers to you all! To our friends! To our followers! To our colleagues! To our family!

To all the designers out there!

I hope that you continue to find that which inspires you!

{met inspiration}

New York City is definitely not short on inspiration...

but if you are lost, you know you can win if you go to the MET!

If you have never been to the Metropolitan Museum of Art then you are missing out!

I like to start at the top and work my way down!

On the roof you can enjoy the work of Anthony Caro until late October.

His steel sculptures engage you in form and space, sculpture and architecture...

what is abstract? what is figure? what is landscape? We really enjoyed this exploration!

Typically we run to the European paintings once we are inside... and this time was no different...

we enjoyed the masters and sketches a few classics... but it was a different, new, exhibit that took our breath away!

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. Simply Amazing. We walked through the exhibit with our mouths ajar..

eyes popping..holding our breath until the end. A MUST see for any designer!

Every room was unique and personal and amazing! Here is just a taste of Savage Beauty.

“People find my things sometimes aggressive. But I don’t see it as aggressive.

I see it as romantic, dealing with a dark side of personality.”

“You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.”

It's Wednesday! Lets go Break some Rules!
